Brick slip systems combine the traditional appearance of brickwork with the energy efficiency of modern External Wall Insulation (EWI). These systems are ideal for both refurbishment and new-build projects, especially where retaining a brick façade is required by design specifications or planning regulations.
Insulation Layer
The system begins with the installation of thermal insulation boards, typically made from Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) or Mineral Wool, depending on the project’s fire safety and breathability requirements. These boards are mechanically fixed and/or adhesively bonded to the substrate, forming a continuous insulation layer that significantly reduces heat loss and improves the building's energy performance.
EPS: Lightweight and thermally efficient, suitable for most residential applications.
Mineral Wool: Non-combustible and breathable, ideal for buildings requiring enhanced fire performance.
Reinforcement Layer
A basecoat is applied over the insulation boards and reinforced with a fibreglass mesh to provide impact resistance and prevent cracking. This layer ensures the structural integrity of the system and prepares the surface for brick slip installation.
Brick Slip Adhesive & Application
Brick slips—thin slices of real or manufactured brick—are bonded to the reinforced basecoat using a high-performance adhesive. The slips are arranged to replicate traditional brickwork patterns such as stretcher bond or Flemish bond, offering a visually authentic finish.
Thickness: Typically 15–20mm
Material: Clay, concrete, or resin-based
Finish: Available in a wide range of colours and textures to match regional styles or planning requirements
This makes brick slip systems an excellent solution for projects where maintaining a traditional brick appearance is essential, either for aesthetic continuity or to comply with local planning conditions.
Pointing
Once the brick slips are fixed, the joints are filled with a specialist pointing mortar to complete the brickwork appearance. This step enhances weather resistance and adds to the overall durability of the façade.
Brick slip systems are compatible with various insulation types and meet UK building regulations for thermal performance, fire safety, and durability. They are particularly suited for upgrading older properties, including council-style homes, where a traditional look is preferred alongside modern energy standards.
