Silicone and acrylic render systems are integral components of modern External Wall Insulation (EWI) solutions, designed to enhance both the thermal performance and aesthetic appeal of buildings. These systems are suitable for a wide range of property types, including solid-wall homes, older council houses, and new builds.
Insulation Layer
The system begins with the installation of a thermal insulation board, typically made from Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) or Mineral Wool. These materials are selected based on project requirements such as fire resistance, breathability, and thermal conductivity. The insulation boards are mechanically fixed and/or adhesively bonded to the substrate, forming a continuous thermal envelope that significantly reduces heat loss.
EPS: Lightweight, cost-effective, and offers excellent thermal insulation.
Mineral Wool: Non-combustible, breathable, and ideal for fire-rated applications.
Reinforcement Layer
Once the insulation is in place, a basecoat is applied over the boards, embedded with a reinforcing mesh (usually fibreglass) to provide structural integrity and prevent cracking. This layer ensures long-term durability and impact resistance.
Primer
A primer is applied to the cured basecoat to improve adhesion and regulate absorption before the final render is applied. It also helps enhance colour uniformity and finish quality.
Topcoat Render – Silicone or Acrylic
The final layer consists of either silicone or acrylic render, chosen based on performance and aesthetic preferences:
Silicone Render: Highly breathable, water-repellent, and self-cleaning. Ideal for damp climates and areas exposed to heavy rainfall. It offers excellent UV resistance and long-term colour stability.
Acrylic Render: Durable and flexible with strong adhesion properties. It provides vibrant colour finishes and is suitable for a wide range of substrates.
Both render types are available in various grain sizes and textures, allowing for customisation to suit architectural styles. They are also through-coloured, reducing the need for repainting and maintenance.
This system not only improves thermal efficiency and reduces energy consumption but also enhances the building’s exterior with a clean, modern finish. It complies with UK building regulations and is suitable for residential, commercial, and retrofit applications.
